Two-Way All-Day GO: It’s Getting Done
Dear Friend,
Many years ago, when I first started working professionally in Toronto, I would head daily to Erindale Station to catch the GO Train on its way from Milton to Union Station. It was (and still is) a cheap, convenient, and traffic-free method of commuting downtown.
Tens of thousands of commuters from Mississauga and Milton make that same commute every day. If you live in Mississauga, you likely either commute yourself or know someone who does.
But there was a problem. Every day, only a few trains ran in the morning toward Toronto. And only a few per day would head the opposite direction in the afternoon.
If we worked late and missed the final train, we would be out of luck. Heading by train to Toronto on the weekend was basically impossible for anyone not living along the lakeshore. Certainly no one would have even considered traveling from Toronto to Mississauga for work because the trains only ran in one direction.
Unfortunately, in the decades since then, very few meaningful changes have been made.
The number of trains per day has increased by less than a handful. They still only run in a single direction during weekday rush hour. Service is slow. Delays because of freight-priority are common.
But I am happy to announce that change is finally on the way.
Our Ontario government has announced that it will be supporting two-way all-day GO train serviceon the Milton rail corridor.
Once completed, this project will allow easier commutes for Mississauga residents. It will open our city to visitors from across the region. Two-way all-day GO service is exactly what Mississauga needs.
I hope you’re as excited as me about this important investment in our community. After many years of advocacy, I am delighted to see this project finally underway.
Two-way all-day GO service on the Milton line. It’s getting done.
