Back to Basics in Schools: It’s Getting Done
Wednesday, September 04, 2024
Dear Friend,
The world has changed a lot in the past 25 years. Everything from politics and the economy to technology and day-to-day life has been impacted. We don’t live in the same world as we did 25 years ago.
Yet, our education system has lagged behind. The requirements for the Ontario Secondary School Diploma have been unchanged for 25 years. Previous governments neglected to pay attention to our schools. Math scores fell. Important life skills were not taught.
That’s why our government is reforming the graduation requirements, revitalizing curriculums, and investing in schools.
When students return to classrooms this fall, they will benefit from our back-to-basics policy that ensures students graduate with the skills they will need to succeed in the modern world.
These measures include:
- Cracking down on vaping and the unauthorized use of cell phones in the classroom.
- New curriculums for maths, sciences, languages, and kindergarten.
- Increased focus on technology, STEM, digital media literacy, and skilled trades.
- Financial literacy requirements — helping students manage budgets and live responsibly.
- Home economics — teaching life skills from first aid to cooking.
- Mental health literacy and resources.
- Guidance education to better connect students with their future careers.
- Minimum math standards for educators.
- Accountability measures to ensure all schools are meeting the minimum standards.
This is our plan to reprioritize education, and ensure students are well-equipped for the modern world by focusing on what matters most.
Back to school, back to basics. It’s getting done.
