South Common Community Centre Renovations: It’s Getting Done

Friday, June 21, 2024

Dear Friend,

Earlier this week, the South Common Community Centre closed its doors.  And it won’t be reopening again this year.

But there’s no need to be alarmed.  This is not bad news.

Work is underway for a complete redevelopment of the centre — a project that is long overdue.

The South Common Community Centre first opened its doors in 1981.  In the decades since, it has served as a cornerstone of our community in Erin Mills.  From children to seniors and adults of all ages, many thousands of people have passed through the facility and benefited from the local services including the library, sports centre, and pool.

But forty years is a long time.  Mississauga has changed tremendously during that time.  Our communities have grown and the community centre has aged.

So, it’s now time for the next era.

The government of Ontario has invested $45 million to fund the redevelopment of the South Common Community centre.

This new facility will feature expanded fitness spaces and aquatics facilities, a larger library and meeting spaces, and a new gymnasium.

This is exciting news for Mississauga!  I have been advocating for this project for many years.  Now, we are finally seeing it come to fruition.

A new and improved South Common Community Centre. It’s getting done.

Thomas Street Middle School Expansion: It’s Getting Done

In June of 2020, I joined the then Minister of Education and the local school board trustee in Mississauga to announce an expansion of Thomas Street Middle School.

It was a project that we had been pushing for for a long time.  And we were excited to finally be able to make the announcement (albeit with some social distancing in effect).
